But these are rather lovely, intricately crafted pop songs instead of tie-dye and seeing it live lent an entirely different energy to the experience of Adem.
A rather attractive guy from London (who had an absolutely ace tee) wearing clog-like shoes and dark-rimmed glasses, with a band of a couple girls and a couple guys playing a variety of fun and interesting instruments who I liked to watch almost as much as the front man himself. I've never seen a glockenspiel wielded with such kind fury before.
His new album "Love And Other Planets" is a journey through space and love and is perfect music for a Saturday morning. Quiet, gentle, pretty, twinkly, and sometimes infused with very interesting rhythm structures, it is a dynamic and warm recording. Adem's voice is raspy and strong, and has an air of familiarity. Listening to him feels like an old friend and you're both sharing amazingly cozy memories of each other.
It's just really beautiful, graceful music to enjoy reading something appropriately intellectual and drinking tea. If you get the chance to check out the live show, expect something a little more energetic and up-tempo with some amazing instrumentation. Gooder!
I give it a 6.5. I've listened to it 3 times already this grey Saturday morning.
P.S. Also check out his lovely love/planet machine at www.adem.tv

--
Posted by Danes to Danes - Tuneage at 5/20/2006 02:51:00 AM

While You Broke Through To Other Worlds.....

Using a song lyric as a post title.
Aren't I post-modern.
Just a wee note to say I am settling in rather well to life on the other side!

Accomplished:
- Got a job
- Got a bank account
- ALMOST have a national insurance number
- Got a provisional license (this entire endeavour is going to be a nightmare involving the highway code I don't understand because they use foreign references such as "slip road" and "carriageway" and "lorry" and also encompassing a hazard perception test, a theory test, and a practical test. I've been driving for almost a decade, people!)

And so, slowly but surely, the aim of becoming an official expat is being realized. Me and the man are having a good time carving out a little niche for ourselves here and getting used to living with each other. I have come to realize that I am ridiculously entrenched in my own ways at 26 years old. I will be intolerable come 75 when today I am rather particular about how I like the dishes washed and the laundry done. But himself has done very well with the adjustments and we're planning on finding an apartment of our own later in the summer.
Of course, this is going to happen after a couple adventures. You couldn't expect anything less, now could you? I'm headed to Greece in 3.5 weeks with Julia (whom you will notice factors rather heavily in this blog, and in my life in general to be honest. She's my other.) for 2 weeks which will be unbelievably fabulous. I die for it. Islands, ancient sites, tzaziki. How can a girl go wrong? And then in July I am headed back home for 1 short week in order to attend the mountain wedding of my lovely, lovely lady friend Cath. With her fetlocks blowing in the wind....
I am currently working for an environmental consultant in Stonehaven, which is just south of Aberdeen. It's a rather good job, methinks, and I am acclimatizing well. I got swag including wellies and polo shirts. I work a block from the beach.
Other than that, me and the boy have kept busy going to gigs, reading, watching movies, eating, breathing, sleeping.
It has been a smooth move ("....ex-lax") and I'm very happy....it's weird for me to be settling in somewhere for the first time since the summer of 2004 when "Everything Changed" and I'll admit I dig it. The job which takes me outside and out of town, the apartment that tilts but still keeps us warm, the life which takes me to pubs and camping and used book sales at the local Quaker Meeting House. Speaking of which, got to shower. Those Quakers like their cleanliness.

The Hip Happenings....

I leave for Scotland in approximately 16 days. I have much packing and socializing to do in this limited amount of time, as I again fill my schedule chock to the brim. This has always been a weakness of mine; needing to be busy every single breathing moment or somehow I am less of a worthy person. It's like a night at home, actually accomplishing something for a change, means I'm terribly unpopular and lonely. So I proceed to keep myself in a Paris-Hilton-esque social calendar (but without the diamonds and dramatic car crashes).
Me and Julia are up to no good (as per usual) which means extra long hilarious conversations about everything and nothing all at once. I spend a lot of my time in her bed, sleeping, nursing hangovers, and watching hockey and commiserating about what we die for, good calls, bad calls.
The rye has made a vicious comeback.
I have been trying to see all my pals before the Big Day, and have even tried to contact some old flames to live extra vicariously in my last couple weeks here. The Chapters Girls are all together again, after Mel made it back on Friday from a year in Sotuh Korea, and the 18th should be a grand night out.
I went to a Stars concert on Saturday evening, which was fantastic in many ways:
1) Great live band. A very tight and beautiful sound, and the singers were the stars (pun intended) of the show. She has a lovely voice and they play off each other with style and humour. There was a touching moment when they were bantering between songs, and he leaned in and kissed her shoulder.
2) A few Heinekens with my pal Joe, who I also die for (catchphrase of the moment).
3) Ran into some pals of yore (actually more pals of the ex, which always makes for comfy small talk) and it was very good to see them (and funny because I used to absolutely die for one of them when I was about 15/16 years old). Ended up watching the gig with one of them. It was grand to catch up and I think beers may be in order.
4) Actually home before midnight! As I had a double at "The Restaurant" on Sunday (starting at 9:00am for a fabulous brunch shift) I actually made the responsible decision to go home and not fall into the clever trap of the tasty beverages for a second night in a row. Got some incoherent late-nite phone calls and texts which are always good for a giggle and fell asleep under my toasty heated blanket.
The restaurant is sucking my soul dry, but I knew that would happen. I always adore the people I work WITH and despise the actual job. People really sometimes treat you like you're an absolute tit when you slave as a server. Like the most important thing on your To Do List is to make sure their Clubhouse doesn't come with any mayo. And if you get it wrong (heaven forbid you're human and make errors) they don't tip you and you have to pay out of your own pocket to work for them. I love serving.
The clincher is, it seems I'm GOOD at it...people usually seem to like me (I actually had one guy tell me I looked like Julia Roberts and I nearly kissed his feet for his kind but inaccurate observation), I don't crash or get in the weeds with any less than about 10 tables (depending on seating times, of course), I'm not lazy or incompetent. I was told by someone they could see me as a restaurant manager and it took all my self control to not vocalize the screams I heard in my head.
Today I finally started to get rid of some of my extraneous clothing. Feels good.
So there's my long and unwieldy update. Sleep beckons. Enjoy responsibly!

[Danes - Tuneage] 2/06/2006 11:17:00 PM

Oh my.
I am in L-O-V-E with a boy named Sufjan. His name apparently means "With His Sword". And I love him.
Did I mention that?
This guy can write a song that is simply incomparable to anything else coming out today. It is gorgeous, intricate pop with a grand scale that will leave you a changed listener. He can write a song about a serial killer and the empathy pours out of you. He can write a song about a UFO and make you believe. Flute, piano, guitar, banjo, brass....the gangs all here and cohesive as shit (even though he is a one man band onto himself with approximately 23 instruments under his belt).
Epic. Indispensable. Essential.
Listen to any of the newer stuff; "Come On Feel The Illinoise!", "Greetings From Michigan, The Great Lake State", or "Seven Swans" and become enraptured.
He sings as a Christian; religious allegory entwined with lovely bits about summer camps. Yet he is able to establish the distinction between the beliefs themselves and the institutions that gives such theological leanings a bad name. You don't feel like you're being talked at about how you should be living you life, you feel like Suffie (as I affectionately call him) is simply showing you a bit of himself, all honesty and earnestness. He is telling his personal truth in a beautiful and connected way.
Wow.
I am in L-O-V-E....

--
Posted by Danes to Danes - Tuneage at 2/06/2006 11:17:00 PM

Happy 2006!

Hello Everyone,
Hope your Hogmanay celebrations were all up to snuff. Check with me tomorrow to see if I'm still breathing.

Merry Ho-Ho!

Hello all!
Just wanted to send yet another Christmas wish out into cyberspace.
Hope the holidays are filled with the following things (in no particular order):
-cheer
-sugar
-turkey (or some form of seasonal sustenance)
-Santa
-as little work as possible
The old man Claus was very good to me himself today, with a new iPod in the dock as we speak (after a tragic loss in Bonndorf, Germany which cause much tears and grief) and a couple fantastic books for perusal.
Hope all your respective 2006s are just chock full with fun, fun, and more fun. No? Like good sounds put together into one cohesive song? Yes? Than do I have a treat for you.
Metric is part of the stellar Toronto scene (Broken Social Scene, Stars, etc.) that we all know and love.
"Live It Out" is Metric's second album, and it's a gooder.
More guitar and thrash than the previous album, "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?", it hits you just a little harder and in a place that hurts just a little more.
But, oh baby, it hurts so good.
With witty, cutting lyrics aimed at anyone from hipsters to consumerists, this is smart pop dance rock (ah, the joys of genre...perhaps a little new wave thrown in there for good measure) with a killer female lead singer whose vocals are beautiful and grungy all at once.
I dance like a fool to Metric, and you probably should too.
Out of my rating system, this lovely gem is worth a whopping 6. Ahh, the intricacies of life.
So I am overwhelmed with everything necessary in order for me to figure out my life here. Unpack, find my shoes, find a job, call my peeps (yes, I did just say 'peeps'), send away my passport, send Christmas cards, BUY Christmas cards....the list goes on. I am feeling a little crazy. But tonight I started unpacking and getting everything put away, AND I am also going to finish my fancy dancy DVD of my trip photos. Dude, this thing is stellar. So proud.
On the other hand, I have been able to catch up with a few pals and that has been simply excellent. More of that to come, methinks! Today I went for a walk by the river with my pal Julia of Portugal fame, and went to the mall where everything looked fantastic and cheap and I couldn't buy any of it. Did have a return Jugo Juice, though, and so I was a happy lady.
I also have my second interview at a restaurant for a serving job, which means hopefully some easy and quick moolah coming my way (or should I say coming Visa's way?).
Ghosts of the non-so-distant past have also shown up. Yowza. Wish me luck.
I would say a successful homecoming.

Viva La France!

I only wish I knew the proper punctuation for that sentence.
Plus, I finally saw "Casablanca" last week and have a mental image forever of Madeleine LeBeau (who plays the tart Yvonne) singing with tears in her kohl-lined eyes and saying this very phrase in the face of the Germans. Now that's film-making.
Anyways, here for my cousin's very French wedding celebration and just wanted to note a few interesting eccentricities.
The wedding lasted until 5:00am with an extra luncheon at 1:00pm the following day (including clean-up duties at 12 for the family). I don't know about anyone else, but my fellow Canadians and I were right pooped. Chatting about this, we were told that some weddings have days and days of these celebrations that often go into the wee hours. I am OLD. And obviously NOT French.
They have many strange wedding songs where people are expected to join in in some sort of activity, be it linking elbows and swaying to and fro for a good 5 minute interlude, or standing up and waving your napkin like a crazy person for another 5 minute interlude.
All in all many a good time was had, but I also felt like, as my Aunt aptly put it, a "wet blanket". Couldn't mingle as my French is atrocious. Didn't understand what was going on so often stood there like a dunce. But dancing is international, and once that kicked off all was well in the world of Dana. I was very happy to be able to go to see my cousin and help celebrate her marriage to her husband...she was a lovely bride and he was a dashing groom and it was a stellar time all around!
My first international wedding being a success, I am anxious to get home as it feels so close. Close meaning after a very comfortable night forthcoming in London Gatwick airport.
Should get to bed. More France tomorrow!

[Danes - Tuneage] Awesome Aural Adventures: Rogue Wave

Ah, the boy is back.
Rogue Wave's new album, "Descended Like Vultures", is one to be enjoyed while packing for a trip, making dinner, reading John Irving.
Alright, well maybe that's just what I did while listening to it, and pretty much digging it to bits.
I am a sucker for Rogue Wave ever since I downloaded some of "Out Of The Shadow" from iTunes, now on the ever-lost iPod of yore. But that's another story.
This new album isn't really new territory from the formula that worked so well for them the last time. Sweet vocals, sweet melodies, sweet arrangements...which does say that they have just polished their sound with more of a studio vibe and less immediacy and intensity. Newer, shinier Rogue Wave for the masses of indie pop fans out there (a group of which I am an unashamed member).
I will say this: The songs, at first listen, do seem a little less...necessary than those on the first album. Meaning I could do without one or two of the songs in my collection. But, that said, I also do not have current access to my main mode of music familiarity; the car.
Overall verdict: Not as killer as "Out Of The Shadow" but still quite grand. I give it a 5 out of 7.

--
Posted by Danes to Danes - Tuneage at 11/14/2005 04:47:00 PM
Note: I have since given it a further listen and there are a couple stellar tunes which have now become necessary. She is simply adorable.
Anyways.
The Subways, with their album "Young For Eternity", are a band from England who seem to know how to do it simple, with pure and poppy hooks destined to make you bob your head and tap your feet. Great rock to clean house to, it is not complicated or introspective, just catchy and listenable as hell.
Young, brash, punchy.
WARNING: Do not listen if you want something thoughtful or 'deep'. Philosophers they are not, The Subways write straightforward tunes without much exploration into deeper themes. But good, good tunes they are, and this does not detract from the ultimately enjoyable experience of the album.
Out of my 7 stars, I do believe a good, solid 4 is in order.

--
Posted by Danes to Danes - Tuneage at 9/13/2005 11:00:00 AM
Note: It is now May 2006 and I don't think I've listened to this album since I wrote this post. I mentioned how I used to dance around our front room when I was about 4 years old and cry to the lovely pan-pipes tunes of Zamfier.
The next weekend, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, on the corner of the Royal Mile, someone is blasting Zamfier over a couple of loudspeakers.
Yowza.
Example #2:
I bought a new flow-y shawl in Albufeira the other day with Julia as I fell in love with the pattern and colour. I get to my hostel in Sevilla, Spain, and lo and behold my new scarf almost exactly matches my bedsheets. I will post a picture later to prove it.
Brill.
(Tribute to Julia)

All By Myseee--eee---lllffff.....

A typing singer I´m not.
Just had Julia leave to home after a stellar time in Portugal together. I have been wandering around Sevilla, Spain, and the following thought came to mind:
Why do people travel? Why am I so insistent upon this line of adventure, putting it before financial security, before relationships, before comfort?
Basically, why am I here?
The thought of pride came to mind...I have been polling various people as to which of the seven deadly sins they are most guilty of, and at first I thought Pride (but Sloth soon took first place after a very slow and idle last lap). I do love being that girl who has been many places, able to chat at length about Costa Rica....Southeast Asia....and now many parts of Europe. But nope, I think if I never got to tell anyone what I´ve done, I would still do it.
So, that brings us to the possibility of ´running away´. Am I avoiding facing situations and issues left behind in a cloud of very expensive dust? Some weird dreams I have had lately indicate I have some buried craziness left in me yet, but I also feel being here and going wherever my feet take me has been instrumental in the very new age ´healing process´.
So what does that leave us with?
I think I am here because I can´t give up the adrenaline rush that comes with stepping off a train/bus/plane into a country for the first time, where you have no idea what´s going on or who´s saying what or where the heck you are going to lay your head that night. It´s an addiction of the purest form. You do it once, and it leaves you wanting more. I am here because I would rather be alone in Sevilla in an internet cafe than at work in Calgary.
My idler lifestyle begins now.

Lets Go Surfing Now...

Alright, so I MAY not be the bestest blogger known to man.
It has been awhile, but I promise I have a good excuse.
Being in Portugal, for one.
Quickie update, as I need a siesta:
Julia, my super-pal (she even brought her cape), arrived from Canada on Sunday morning for some hot Edinburgh Fringe Festival action. We took the city by storm and I finally partook in a deep fried Mars Bar. What an adventure in grease and sugar!
We saw a couple fab shows and went on yet another ghost tour. EEEKKK!
Came to Portugal after a remarkably uncomfy night in London Stansted.
Porto: Stunning, charming, manageable.
Lisbon: Lively, beautiful, confusing.
A day of travel faux pas with closed bus stations and arriving in incorrect cities at midnight.
Lagos: Crazy, easy, hot.
Tonight is the biggest beach party of the year to celebrate the end of summer, so should be decent good times. We went surfing today and I caught my waves in the afternoon after a morning of frustration realizing the time spent in the waves previously doesn't stick with you for 2 years.
So that's me in a hot, slowly tanning nutshell.

Scotland is my oyster...

And I will shuck until I can't shuck any more.
So I have arrived back in Scotland after a couple days of hardcore train and airplane action to cool weather and Harry Potter! I will give a review once I start up my books page and once I am finished. No spoilers please, as I am only about 1/4 of the way through. Is it wrong to have a crush on a fictional character? Because if it is, I don't want to be right.
So I have been spending most of my time in The Deen (Aberdeen), hanging out, going to gigs (one on Saturday night and one tonight), shopping for the pending Portugal and Spain adventures, and just wandering about. Next weekend we are headed to Edinburgh for a Bonnie Prince Billy show, and hopefully some other tidbits from the Fringe smorgasbord. My friend Julia arrives on Sunday (who is luckily on the swift mend from the aforementioned lung infection) and off the Portugal we go! I think the sea air and warm weather will be good for her health. The port, on the other hand...
Also note I have linked to my brother's blog in the Links section dealie. He has a very dry and clever sense of humour, and is currently addicted to taking photos with his new cameraphone. But don't despair..this, too, shall pass. I am winking right now. To no one in particular, and the others in this internet cafe are a little freaked out.
Aberdeen is go!

[Danes - Tuneage] Awesome Aural Adventures: Shout Out Louds

Alright, so first let me introduce this section:
Music. Love. Vice. Financial downfall.
Basically, I am an addict and must therefore impose my musical opinions on anyone who takes the time to read this.
Inaugural entry: Shout Out Louds album "Howl Howl Gaff Gaff"
They are a band from Sweden (where I recently came back from, but interestingly enough I was pumped for it before I ever stepped foot on Scandanavian soil), and the CD was a welcome back to Scotland gift, the first new CD I had in my hot little shaking hands for weeks.
The vibe of this album is very poppy, happy goodness. I am absolute crap at comparing bands to other bands, so alas I can't really tell you what they are like. I can tell you how they make me feel. They invoke a smiling, summer day. Up-tempo and catchy, laden with sweet melodies and laughing vibes.
On my 7-star rating system, I would give them a big 5.5.
Plus there is a really cute picture of the girl in the band, Bebban Strenborg, in the insert.

--
Posted by Danes to Danes - Tuneage at 8/15/2005 06:43:00 AM

Darn that Calgary Air....

So some quick background: I am currently in Europe, spending a 7 month stint doing what Dana does best: NOTHING. It has been stellar times, so far having visited London, Ireland, Scotland (homebase), Germany, Poland, Sweden, and currently chillin' in Estonia. I have a trip lined up at the end of this month with my good pal from home Julia to go to Portugal and then I was going to head into Spain for some quality September action.
Here's the rub:
Julia has come down with a viral chest infection!
Let's all send out communal good thoughts to Julia in hopes that her wee lungs are troopers and turn out a-ok, and also that all our excitement and planning come to fruition.

Zodiac Hi-jinks

So my entire life I have been a Pisces. Fishy, intuitive, arty, blah, blah, blah. Now, as I fill in my personal info on my profile for this thing, I note that they deem me an Aries even though my birthdate is entered correctly AND I seem to think being born on March 20th does, in fact, make me a Pisces. Wha...? Have I been reading the wrong horoscope all these years? Making life decisions based on a paragraph in a newspaper, all the while reading the wrong blurb? Man alive, where has my life gone awry?
